---- — HAVERHILL — Lost in the sea of spins, wedges and traps that backbone the Whittier Tech offense is one simple fact:
The junior quarterback can chuck the pigskin just a little bit.
“When you have a running game like we do, that’s so hard to stop, sometimes you just don’t pass. Games like this show teams we have that other option,” said the QB Connor Bradley, who hit 8 of 15 through the air yesterday for 204 yards, including TD bombs of 37, 62 and 68 yards to lead the Wildcats over winless Greater Lowell.
Now 4-2, Whittier locks to lock down some prime position in the Division 5 playoffs. To do that, the Cats will need to close well in the regular season finale Saturday at Shawsheen.
“Every week, we’re playing for something, and that’s what matters most in my senior year,” said Jaylin Deveau, one of Bradley’s key targets yesterday — catching two balls for 76 yards and a score.
Scott Bonneau, with 3 grabs for 88 yards and a score, and Sidney Taylor, with 2 for 39 and a TD, were the others.
Of course, the Wildcats ran the football too, chewing up 296 yards on 34 tries, with Jesus Sanchez leading the way at 15 for 178.
“If the defense starts thinking pass, it makes running the football easier,” said Sanchez, whose 75-yard sweep on the final play of the third quarter nailed all the Cats’ starters to the bench for the final 11 minutes. “I think a game like this shows we have a lot of talent, and we’re going to keep rolling on.”
Defensively and on special teams, the 21-0 third quarter might have been the Cats best of the year.
While Air Bradley opened things up on the scoreboard, the Gryphons ran just four plays, fumbling once, throwing an interception and failing to cover a kickoff, which the Cats quickly pounced on.
“We’re much more dangerous when we have that second option,” said Bradley. “We have a lot of guys on this team willing to do whatever it takes. We’re going to be tough to stop.”
