College Roundup: Barry, Merrimack down Wilmington in opener

---- — Anthony Barry came off the bench to score 21 points and grab 16 rebounds as Merrimack opened its season with an 84-71 win over Wilmington (Del.) in the Bentley Tip-Off Tourney.

Gelvin Solano also had 21 points, Troy Hammel scored 16 points and Kevin Regan added 15.

Wilmington led 31-27 at the half but its cold shooting (47.6 from line, 2.38 on 3’s) was costly.

Merrimack plays Concordia today at 6 p.m. in Waltham.

Junior transfer Carson Desrosiers from Windham helped Providence win its opener 82-78 over Boston College in overtime. In his Friar debut, the 7-footer from Central Catholic played 22 minutes off the bench. He scored seven points (2-2 shooting, 3-4 free throws), grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots.

Freshman Noah Vonleh of Haverhill was the starting center as Indiana won its opener 100-72 over Chicago State. Vonleh was a monster on the boards (14 rebounds in 22 minutes) and added 11 points (3-11 shooting, 5-5 free throws) and three blocks.

Stonehill took a 3-0 lead and held on to beat Merrimack, 3-2, in the Northeast-10 field hockey semifinals. Katrina Squeri and Jessica Otis scored for the Warriors (13-5). Stonehill improved to 18-2.

NCAA pairings will be announced Monday.
