Nava's base running blunder sends Sox to second

Nava or Meals more at fault? Pinch runner Daniel Nava failed to score from second on a Stephen Drew line drive double just over the head of a backtracking Rays right fielder Wil Myers in the eighth with one out. Nava read the ball wrong and advanced only to third. Then, on the next play, Nava was thrown out at home plate trying to score on a fly to short left. Nava got under the tag of Rays catcher Jose Molina but home plate umpire Jerry Meals blew the call.

“What I saw was Molina blocked the plate and Nava’s foot lifted,” Meals said. “But in the replays, you could clearly see Nava’s foot got under for a split second and then lifted, so I was wrong on my decision. From the angle I had, I did not see his foot get under Molina’s shin guard.”

Yes, the ump was wrong but Nava should have scored on the previous play. More fault goes to Nava for the loss.

Red Sox Notes: 1B Mike Napoli struck out with two runners in scoring position to end the game. ... 3B Brandon Snyder blasted his second homer of the season, a solo shot in the sixth. He is 7 for 21 against lefties this season. ... Manager John Farrell was ejected for arguing the Nava call. It was his second ejection of the season. ... Closer Koji Uehara threw a perfect ninth and hasn’t allowed a run in 13.1 innings in July, walking one and striking out 17 during that span. ... LHP Franklin Morales made his first rehab outing for Triple-A Pawtucket last night. He struck out the side in one inning of work.

Xander getting close? Top Red Sox prospect, SS Xander Bogaerts, played third base last night for Triple-A Pawtucket and was 2 for 4 with a double and run. “I think Xander’s doing everything he can to tell us when he’s ready to come to the big leagues,” Farrell said. “Whether that’s this week or next month, that’s still in the debate or into the conversation. ... I think we’re all looking forward to the day he begins his career.”

Today’s ceremony: The Sox will honor former manager Joe Morgan before tonight’s game to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “Morgan Magic.” In addition to Morgan, seven members of the 1988 American League East title team are expected to attend, including Roger Clemens, Mike Smithson, Tom Bolton, Lee Smith, Dwight Evans, Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd and Spike Owen.
