---- — RED SOX 8, MARINERS 2
No. 1 Star: Red Sox rookie starter Brandon Workman went 6.0 strong innings, allowing just one run, which was earned, on six hits and one walk while striking out nine. He threw 103 pitches and 69 strikes (67 percent strikes).
No. 2 Star: Second baseman Dustin Pedroia broke a 0-for-15 slump with a homer over the Green Monster in the second inning. It put Boston ahead 5-1. Pedroia was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs.
No. 3 Star: Right fielder Shane Victorino went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three runs.
Three Long Balls: The Red Sox hit three homers. Pedroia stroked his seventh of the season. Jacoby Ellsbury clobbered his fifth and Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his ninth.
The Bullpen: Relievers Craig Breslow and Matt Thornton each pitched perfect innings and Thornton struck out two. Pedro Beato pitched the ninth and allowed a run on two hits and a walk.
Iglesias Pulled: Brandon Snyder replaced Jose Iglesias at third base in the ninth but manager John Farrell said it was just to get Snyder and wasn’t because of a potential trade. Jackie Bradley Jr. also was removed from his game in Triple-A Pawtucket. He left with discomfort after a throw, reported the Providence Journal. Of course, minutes later, Iglesias’ deal for Jake Peavy was announced.
