Best money you will ever spend

Best Money you’ll ever spend

Honestly, I’m not being a shill. One of the hidden jewels of area sports are the Eagle-Tribune photos you can buy on-line. If we shoot a game, 1-2 photos make the paper but another 5-6 may be on-line. The color prints are eye-popping. it’s just something that can’t be captured in a newspaper. Check them out at smugmug.com and then thank me.

Dunk of the year

Hopefully, all you hoop fans have already scene the dunk from one foot inside the foul line by Daniel Skinner of Jacksonville (Texas) Community College. If not, go to YouTube. The clueless ref had to give him a charge!

All-name team

While looking up information on Skinner, I noticed a teammate who was a, pardon the pun, slam dunk for the All-Name team: Nimrod Hilliard.

Wow, talk about parents who must have wanted a girl.

Chevy runs deep

In case you were wondering about Pinkerton’s Eagle-Tribune All-Star field hockey player Chevy Collins, that’s just a nickname. Her real first name is Chavonne.

Character counts

Pentucket grad Colin Macdonald won Western New England University’s Barsalou Award, which goes to the freshman men’s soccer player who exhibits character and leadership. Macdonald scored four goals including the winner in OT vs. Westfield.

Wrestling with tragedy

Eagle-Tribune wrestling guru Dave Dyer proudly put together a lengthy list of NFL stars who also made names for themselves on the mats. I didn’t have the heart to mention that the Chiefs’ Jovan Belcher, who had just committed that stunning murder-suicide, was a high school All-American wrestler on Long Island.

Season’s greetings

Merry Christmas to University of Cincinnati President Santa Ono, Bears QB Jay Cutler, who is a native of Santa Claus, Ind., Coast Guard basketball player Eli Sponseller of North Pole, Alaska, and Syracuse basketball player Rakeem Christmas.

Finds the touch

After scoring three goals in her first 100 games, Union senior forward Nicole Bartlett of Methuen scored two crucial goals in back-to-back games. She scored the game-winner in a 4-3 win over Maine. The next night she tallied in a 3-2 win over the Black Bears.

Thomas’ promise

St. John’s Prep junior Johnathan Thomas, who was brilliant in the playoff win over Andover with 209 rushing yards and three TDs, already has an offer from UMass and BC reportedly is close to offering.

Russell vs. rondo

Never would have guessed that Bill Russell (4,100) had more assists with the Celtics than Paul Pierce (4,009), Rajon Rondo (3,767), JoJo White (3,686) and Dennis Johnson (3,486).
