LOS GATOS, Calif. — Services will be private for John Richard "Dick" Buchanan, who died Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at his home in Los Gatos, Calif. of natural causes.. He was 81. .
For many years, Dick worked for Merrimack Paper Company, Lawrence, where he retired in 1989.. An avid outdoorsman and fisherman, he moved from his long time home in Salem, N.H., to Mashpee, Mass., to be closer to the sea and in 1994 headed west to Santa Cruz, Calif. where he could fish year round. .
Dick became involved with the Santa Cruz Port Authority and served as Port Commissioner from 1996-2004.. During this time, one of his proudest moments was playing a key role in building the Santa Cruz harbor light house. .
Survivors include longtime companion, Alice Beliveau of Los Gatos; daughter, Lynn Chartrain; son, Michael Buchanan; stepdaughter, Donna Pasters; stepson, Frederick Ritter; and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. .
ARRANGEMENTS: Per his wishes, a private ash-scattering memorial will be held in Monterey Bay, Calif. in late spring.
