Police and firefighters were searching the Merrimack River and its banks for an unidentified 17-year-old youth late Tuesday night. He had not been found as of 9:30 p.m.
The youth went overboard while he was in a boat with a 12-year-old boy, according to Detective Lt. Robert Pistone, spokesman for the Haverhill Police Department. The 12-year-old is accounted for, Pistone said.
A state police helicopter was searching the river along with at least one Haverhill Fire Department rescue boat. State troopers were looking along the bank of the river behind DeLuca Chevrolet. Pistone said the 17-year-old may have gone overboard in the Methuen section of the river.
Police and firefighters appeared to be concentrating the search between the Comeau Bridge, which joins the Bradford section of Haverhill with the downtown, and Interstate 495.
