LONDONDERRY — A fire caused extensive damage to a townhouse on Winding Pond last night.

The fire broke out shortly before 9 p.m. at 20 Winding Pond Road, causing an estimated $150,000 damage to the basement and first and second floors, according to Fire Chief Kevin MacCaffrie.

Two cats escaped when firefighters opened the basement door. Owner Chuck England and his two children were not home at the time, MacCaffrie said.

Although the cause has not been determined, MacCaffire said it appears the fire started in the laundry room.

A passerby called the fire department after seeing flames through a window, he said.

Firefighters responded from Londonderry, Derry and Windham. Auburn, Litchfield and Hudson helped cover Londonderry's stations.

It took about 25 minutes to get the fire under control, MacCaffrie said.
