LAWRENCE — Police are investigating the theft of an ATM from a liquor store early Saturday.
The suspects torched the lock off the grate at the entrance and then smashed the door to break into Super Liquors at 35 S. Broadway, Officer Alan Laird wrote in his report.
A restaurant located beside the liquor store was busy at the time of the burglary, Laird noted, though there were no witnesses to the crime.
But the store owner told police a security camera may have caught the suspects on video. Lawrence Police Chief John Romero said detectives will view the video to see if it helps their investigation.
Police recovered the ATM about eight hours later, pried open and with no money inside. They had received a call from an MBTA employee who reported the machine had been dumped on the side of the train tracks.
Officer Eric Cerullo said police found the discarded ATM under the bridge that goes over the tracks at Salem Street.
The ATM owner told police he had filled the ATM on Friday morning.
