BRENTWOOD (AP) — The defense rested yesterday without calling any witnesses at a murder conspiracy trial in New Hampshire.

Lawyers for Robin Knight are expected to argue today that the state failed to prove its case against him in the 2005 beating death of handyman Jack Reid. Mastermind John Brooks was convicted of capital murder in the killing last year, but is appealing.

Prosecutors said the 57-year-old Knight lured Reid to the Deerfield farm where he was killed on the pretext of hiring him. But lawyers for the North Hampton resident said he thought Brooks planned to warn Reid to stay away from his family, not kill him.

Prosecution witnesses testified that Knight did know Reid was going to be killed and said he helped dispose of the body and clean up afterward.
