METHUEN | State and city police converged on downtown after someone reported they saw a man in a black trenchcoat with a machine gun and ammunition strapped to his chest walking in the vicinity of Presentation of Mary Academy and St. Monica schools just before 2 p.m.

It turned out to be a teenage boy carrying a paintball gun. But the caller thought it was real and police put two Catholic schools in lockdown.

Parents arriving to pick up their children were greeted by police and told to stay in their cars while a search of the area was conducted.

Police later said they had identified the teen and were going to talk to him and his parents.

Students were released to their parents.
