HAVERHILL — Two men carried the body of a dead woman into the emergency room of Merrimack Valley Hospital, dropped it there, and fled, police said.
Detectives have found the men and are investigating the death of the woman, who appeared to be about 20 years old, Deputy Chief Donald Thompson said.
"The death is suspicious,'' he said.
Thompson said police were called to the hospital at 7:55 a.m. yesterday, after the body was dropped off. He said police are releasing no other details — including the names of the men — until they gather more information about the death.
Police are awaiting formal identification of the woman. They said there was no driver's license or other identification on her body, which has been moved to Boston where the state medical examiner will perform an autopsy and do toxicology studies.
The autopsy will determine whether the woman suffered any cuts or blows. Toxicology tests determine whether foreign substances, such as drugs, were in her system.
Police said they believe they know who the woman is, but cannot be certain until they contact her relatives. They will have to travel to Boston to view the body, Thompson said.
"We have to wait for the family identification,'' Thompson said.
He said there were initial reports the woman may have been a Plaistow resident, but police later found out that is not true. He said she may have connections to Plaistow, such as relatives there.
State police and the district attorney's office also are involved in the investigation.
