NORTH ANDOVER — A telephone caller reporting an erratic driver on Route 114 early Wednesday morning brought about a drunken driving charge, police said.

Demetra Kosta, 18, of 5 Hemlock Circle, Midd

leton, was stopped at 12:18 a.m. by Patrolman Scott Whittaker. While the officer was questioning him, Kosta passed out and was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, police said.

Kosta will be summonsed into Lawrence District Court to face charges of drunken driving, transporting liquor as a minor, a marked lanes violation and failure to stop at a red light. Whittaker stopped Costa near 110 Turnpike St.

Kosta’s passenger, Eric Doyle, 20, of 3 Hemlock Circle, Middleton, was arrested and charged with underage possession of liquor.

About an hour and a half later, at 1:45 a.m., Officer Julie Nigro stopped William Scione III after he went through a red light on Massachusetts Avenue, police said. Scione, 25, of 60 Main St., was arrested and charged with drunken driving and failure to stop for a red light.

“We have aggressive OUI enforcement,” police Lt. Charles Gray said. The incident involving Kosta should encourage motorists to not hesitate calling police when they see erratic drivers on the road.

Police officers follow up on reports of erratic operation, Gray said, but they can’t always find the impaired driver. In this instance, he pointed out, the person who called the police helped them take a young man off the road who should not have been driving.
