DERRY — Six candidates are squaring off for two open spots on the Town Council.

In the District 3 councilor race, incumbent Neil Wetherbee seeks another three years on the council, going up against Shannon Coyle, wife of current Councilor Kevin Coyle.

Four candidates are in the running for the open Councilor-at-Large job. Incumbent Brad Benson faces Jeff Lawman, Maria Lebel and Doug Newell.

During a local cable TV forum recently, candidates spoke on their ideas for Derry and what it would take for someone to be a good town councilor.

Benson and Wetherbee said they will draw on their own track records in hopes of turning out voters to send them back for three more years on the council.

"I've tried to learn more and more and get better at this job every year," Wetherbee said.

In a taped statement at the forum, Benson said he wanted to see work continue on the Route 28 widening project and start to get new businesses there.

Shannon Coyle is a Londonderry police officer and said she would bring a fresh face to the council. She said she would work to help invigorate the group's ideas and decisions.

Newell stressed tax relief for Derry, which has the fourth highest tax rate in the state.

"This is not something to be proud of," he said. "There are lots of things I can bring to the table. We need a fresh look at how things are run.

Lawman said he wanted to strengthen the community, get more people out to support the downtown and features like the bike path, while attracting the right kind of business to bring workers the best earnings.

Voting locations are Gilbert H. Hood Middle School for Districts 1 and 4, and West Running Brook Middle School for Districts 2 and 3. Polling hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
