LAWRENCE — A city man was held without bail after police say he punched his ex-girlfriend and mother of his four children and then fired a shot at her, according to police and court records.

Carmelo Baez, 41, who was wearing a GPS monitoring bracelet when police say he attacked his ex-girlfriend Saturday night, was arrested and charged by Lawrence police with armed assault to murder and domestic assault and battery.

Judge Michael Brooks ordered Baez held without bail at his arraignment Monday in Lawrence District Court.

Baez is now due back in court on June 17 for a hearing to determine if he's a danger to himself or the community at large, according to court records.

The alleged victim, age 40, flagged down on officer on patrol on Tremont Street just before 9 p.m. Saturday and said her ex-boyfriend "had just punched in her the face and shot at her while she was in a vehicle," according to a police report.

She told the officer Baez sneaked up on her while she was sitting in the passenger's seat of the car and punched her. He then "reached into his waistband and pulled out a firearm and cocked it," according to the report.

As the driver tried to pull away, Baez fired a shot which hit the windshield of the car. He then ran eastbound on Tremont Street towards Broadway, according to the report.

The woman told police she was in a relationship for 20 years with Baez and they have four children together. They broke up about three months ago, she said.

The officer said the woman had swelling on the right side of her face and he found a silver, 9 mm shell casing in the car.

Shortly after, officers found Baez at his 154 Oxford St. apartment.

Police said he was "sweating profusely" but said he'd been home at his apartment. When officers asked him why he was sweating, Baez said he was "exercising and cleaning the apartment."

"It should be noted when officers later searched the apartment it was a mess and no exercise equipment was seen," according to the report.

Baez allegedly told officers they could search his apartment. A gun was not found there, according to the report.

The police report also indicated Baez has an open criminal case for armed robbery and is on probation.
