Track Talk: Cintron struts stuff at pentathlon
Central Catholic junior Juan Cintron placed fourth at the MSTCA pentathlon in Hingham, a new event which I’d love to see catch on. He scored 2,623 points: 17.12 hurdles, 5-3.5 high jump, 28-9.5 shot put, 19-6 long jump, 5:04.59 1,500.
Raider teammates Conor Abraham (2,388) and Drew Duchemin (2,326) also competed.
Not there to see it
Andover was at the Nashua North Invitational where Londonderry’s Natalie Howes broke Lauren Berg of Central Catholic’s six-year-old area discus record. But Berg, the Andover throws coach, wasn’t present due to a death in the family.
Battle of sprint titans
In winning the 200 meters at Saturday’s Nashua North Invitational, Andover’s Hamza Naveed not only ran the 15th fastest time in area history (22.31) but he also defeated Zakari Jenkins of Nashua North, the 2014 New England 200-meter champion, who was runner-up in 22.40. Prior to his 200 win, Naveed captured the 400 meters in an area-leading 51.97, while Jenkins won the 100 meters.
Encouraging words
Haverhill coach Mike Maguire relayed this story about 50-year area track coach Ernie Perry, who died last week:
“The last I saw him was at Philips. It was right after (his son) E.J. was hired to be the football coach at Andover. I told him how happy I was that he got the job and he responded, ‘It’s where he belongs, just like you belong coaching track in Haverhill, making a difference where you’re from.’ Those words meant a lot to me.”
