Mark Dennehy to coach in the AHL

Former Merrimack College hockey coach Mark Dennehy has agreed to be the new head coach of the Binghamton Devils of the American Hockey League. This comes two months after accepting the job for the Wheeling (W.V.) Nailers of the ECHL. The Devils were allowed permission to talk to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the NHL affiliate of the Nailers.

Former Merrimack College coach Mark Dennehy has decided to change course and is now one step away from the National Hockey League.

The Andover resident, who accepted a job for the Wheeling (W.V.) Nailers of the ECHL, a Pittsburgh Penguins affiliate, two months ago, will instead become the new head coach of the Binghamton Devils of the American Hockey League, affiliate of the N.J. Devils.

The Devils apparently asked the Penguins for permission to interview Dennehy and it was granted.

Dennehy was relieved of his duties after the Merrimack season ended after the second round of the Hockey East tournament. He had been there for 13 seasons.

Dennehy was unavailable for comment.
