Red Sox icon David Ortiz was shot in the Dominican Republic Sunday night, per multiple reports.
According to ESPN’s Enrique Rojas, Ortiz was hospitalized after being shot in an attempted burglary. Ortiz’s father, Leo, confirmed the hospitalization to Rojas.
“They called me to tell me that David is injured Ortizand that they took him to a medical center, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred,” Leo Ortiz told ESPN.
There were varying reports out of the Dominican about the severity of Ortiz’s condition, but they all confirmed he was sent to the hospital. Local journalist Jose Romegro reported the suspected shooter was arrested.
A 10-time All-Star, Ortiz may have been the most larger-than-life figure in Red Sox history on the field, but he was even more important off it. His David Ortiz Children’s Fund has saved the lives of hundreds of kids with cardiac conditions.
As of 11:00 PM, the Red Sox told the Eagle-Tribune they did not have any comment or update on the situation.
