For one day, Whittier was definitely no longer second best Saturday.

The Wildcats, who have come close before, captured the title at the Dan Gionet Memorial Tournament in Pelham, crowning three champions and easily outpacing runner-up Bedford-Minuteman.

Earning titles and pinning their way through the tournament were 113-pounder Angel Alicea, 195-pounder Andrew Buzzell and 220-pounder Sal Fonzo. Buzzell defeated teammate Mkemjika Chiapo in the finals. Also finishing second was 160-pounder Shaun Mears while Andre Caraballo took third at heavyweight.

“We were missing some kids but the guys really wrestled hard,” said Whittier coach Harry Takesian.

GEORGETOWN NOW 15-0

Georgetown/Ipswich repeated as champions of the Brookline Duals by winning four times to improve to 15-0, already just one win away from the school record.

Ian Forgitano (106) and John Blythe (152) were both 4-0 with four pins and Charlie Koshivas won the team outstanding wrestler plaque.

BLAISDELL ON ROLL

Steven Blaisdell continued his recent surge with three pins at 182 as Timberlane routed Bishop Guertin, Bedford and Merrimack to improve to 12-0 while extending its in-state winning streak to 136 straight. Ryan Cole had a pin at both 220 and heavyweight and both Nick Roeger (106) and Barret Kappler (113) were 3-0 with two pins.

VALENTINO A CHAMP

Sophomore Joey Valentino took first place at 120 pounds to pace North Andover to fifth at the rugged Cumberland Tournament in Rhode Island. Jack Perry was second at 126 for the Knights and both Eli Tuttle (145) and CJ Cincotta (152) came in third. Tuttle wrestled a sensational tournament and Cincotta suffered his first loss of the season, in overtime, in the semifinals.

GREEN, METHUEN IMPRESS

In an attempt to get completely healthy, senior Nate Green hasn’t wrestled in every meet this season for Methuen but, when he has, he hasn’t missed a beat.

Green was particularly impressive Saturday as the Rangers won four dual meets to improve to 14-0. He was 4-0 on the day and highlighted the sweep with a 4-2 decision over Marshfield’s Jacob Garcia, who is a returning All-State placers.

Methuen was perfect from 170 to 195 pounds as Trevor Abdallah and Darius Franklin were 3-0 in the first two weights and Travis Manick won twice and Aaron Searth once at 195. Chris Fowler (220) and Bryce Smith (285) had big pins against Marshfield.

CAPTAINS SHINE

Captains Zach Vigroux and Derek Wilson were both 3-0 as Pinkerton went 2-1 in the Border Wars dual tournament, defeating Acton-Boxboro 40-18 and Westerly, R.I., 40-12 but falling to always-tough Winchester 45-28. Robbie Fahey had a pair of pins in his only two matches at 220.

REGGIES’ 1-2-3 PUNCH

Short-handed Greater Lawrence lost three close meets in a quad-meet with Shawsheen, Reading and Wakefield but Christian Hernandez (160), David White (170) and Malib Pastrana (182) were all 3-0 as was heavyweight Tyler MacDonald

TANGUAY IN TOP FORM

Mike Tanguay was 3-0 with three pins as Windham won twice in a quad-meet, losing to Winchester, nipping Acton-Boxboro (36-35) and defeating Westerly R.I.
